                                  HOME SAFETY

WHILE IT IS MOST IMPORTANT THAT PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN REGARDING THE PREVENTION OF BOTH FIRES & ACCIDENTS AT ANY TIME IT IS EVEN MORE SO IF THE SCENARIO WILL MEAN SLOW OR NO RESPONSE FROM THE EMERGENCY SERVICES

This page is dedicated to home safety. Whether you are a bug in or bug out prepper avoiding disaster or calamity that could have been avoided could mean the difference of not only losing all your kit but worse.

Smoke alarms should be installed at least one on each level, test regular and always have a spare battery available. Get into a pre sleep habit to check everything is off that should be. Close all the doors. Consider some basic equipment, fire blanket, extinguisher and know how to use them.

If you invest in a full size extinguisher be sure to get it checked by a suitable qualified engineer yearly, while they do not have an 'end of life' date as opposed to smaller units they should be checked for peace of mind even though the pressure gauge says o.k.
                                 ESCAPE MASK / HOOD
Having a quality escape hood will give you up to 15 minutes of protection to escape from both smoke and related noxious fumes. Different models vary the specification and use. Standards minimum EN 403:2004.

        SCBA. SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS

Especially useful for when the percentage of breathable air is

dramatically reduced for a basic respirator. A demand valve

ensures a constant breathable air source under extreme

conditions.

CAUTION - INCORRECT / UNTRAINED USED OF SCBA CAN BE FATAL

                                                         GAS ALARM

Our gas alarm, hearing in the news about home gas explosion from time to time, decided to get a gas detector as we have mains gas, it detects forms of commercial gas including natural, propane and butane. Remember this is a fuel type gas detector, NOT for carbon monoxide detection. Readily available and not expensive.

                                                      SMELL GAS ?

Call the National Gas Service Emergency Line on 0800 111 999 to report a

suspected gas leak. They'll sort out the problem and tell you what to do to stay

safe.

                                               HEAT DETECTORS

Where smoke alarms are not practical to fit this sensor detects a heat rise above 60 °c.

Commercially available heat detectors (below) cost only slightly more than a smoke alarm.

                                              EMERGENCY LIGHTING

Consider emergency lighting for when the power goes off. Whether it is a mains powered unit activating upon power failure or battery motion detection mini lights, wall mounted mini press lights or wall torch with luminous markers it is better than being plunged into darkness and gives you time to find your kit or other lighting / torch without a scrabble.

Mains fail emergency light on top landing.

These Philips auto lights give a long battery life and work well.

                                              LUMINOUS MARKER
                            Luminous strip on the stairs

IN A GRID DOWN SITUATION STAY SAFE IF USING ALTERNATIVE HEATING OR LIGHTING METHODS INVOLVING FLAME.

CARBON MONOXIDE - LEVELS THAT DO NOT KILL YOU CAN LEAVE YOU BRAIN DAMAGED - SYMPTOMS INCLUDE HEADACHE/DIZZINESS, BREATHLESSNESS, NAUSEA, CHEST/STOMACH PAINS, TIREDNESS LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS, VISUAL PROBLEMS. VENTILATION AND CO DETECTOR ESSENTIAL.

IN EVENT OF ANY MAINS SUPPLY FAILURE ENSURE THAT EVERYTHING IS OFF BEFORE SUPPLY IS RESTORED.

ALARMS - SMOKE, GAS, HEAT/FIRE, CARBON MONOXIDE, FLOOD. TEST THEM REGULAR AND ALWAYS HAVE SPARE BATTERIES AT HOME !

ENSURE YOU KNOW HOW TO TURN OFF YOUR MAINS SUPPLIES, WATER, GAS AND ELECTRICITY !

                                                                                                        CARBON MONOXIDE

Be cautious if you use these ' stick up ' detectors you only have a visual warning.

Trouble with critters , pigeons etc ? We wired the kitchen windows so they can stay open in summer. Windows remain easy to use, the wire hinges simply on plastic cup hooks, use one at the bottom to twist for locking/unlocking.

Risk of flooding ? Flood alarms are available for little cost.
